Caulfield
Race 1- Green Mankini took advantage of a big weight pull to nail Zizou who put up a good fight in the first. Wind Shear converted good winter form to Spring, and Incumbent first up was a flop after starting around the even money mark.
Race 2- Pinnacles came out of that good form race at Sandown to beat the good handicap types here with a nice grinding win from Sonic Quest. Sonic Quest was a bit one paced when he needed to be flattening out from the one barrier and a lack of speed cost him a win, Amerryking again showed something and Mind Your Head ran up to his best in fourth and looks close Mind Your Head.
Race 3- Gamble Me no good last start at 1400m appreciated being back at Caulfield over the six furlongs showing them a clean pair of heels. Vivacious Spirit and Belcentra ran nice run-on type races without looking super flash. Little Arrow had every chance, we could find you an excuse but prefer not to. She's canned Little Arrow.
Race 4- Gold Edition got the rail easy and Royal Asscher had to make her run three deep after running along one off the rail, that was the difference as well as Gold Edition running super. Royal Asscher got to $5 so was worth the dip eachway. I must say though I only got $1.60 in return from my top fluc bet. Not happy about that. I think if someone is prepared to back a horse against an odds-on pop they are entitled to an appropriate place dividend.
Thought Kaphero, our Our Maharaja might have at least made Gold Edition work for the lead, obviously they were content with running as good as they could and earning some form of cheque. That's probably what cost Royal Asscher backers, most would of thought if Gold Edition got the rail from nine she would have to seriously work for it...it was handed to Gold Edition, and the race was over despite us making a good bid in second.
Race 5- Maldivian is flying. Not only is it peaking but improving. Miss Finland backers would have liked to have seen more speed and perhaps misread the race believing Maldivian would take it up and set a solid tempo. Not to be and that cost Miss Finland. Anamato and Maybe Better were solid.
Race 6- Well we were pretty angry by now with not much to show for our day but we had Divine Madonna up our sleeve. In fact if I didn't get cute with the Hussler and Storm Signal, as a few punters pointed out I had picked the quaddie one out in the last four races. Those watching the races got the mail that all the money on track from the "pros" was on Wonderful World & Bon Hoffa. Thankyou got a better price on Divine Madonna. I told you this was going to go her way. Spielmeister leads gives Wonderful World, Niconero nothing to bring it into the race, Divine Madonna tracks Bon Hoffa who has to go early to get wound up. I was queing up at the turn. The straight was just a matter of keeping all four legs in place. Thank you Divine Madonna for getting us out of hole. And thank you "pro punters" for not doing your homework on that one.
Race 7- Brad Rawiller attacked this race which is what punters would want to see on a horse as good as Weekend Hussler. Getting going at the 600m was not only the right move on such a good horse but a smart one...leaving nothing to chance. Marching and a few others didn't get close enough on settling to get up outside of him as predicted so Weekend Hussler was allowed to do as he pleased from two. Deserved winner. Good runs from the next four or five in a different kind of class. Scenic Assault showed that he can run a mile where that looked doubtful going in. Marching well we knew he would be strong but couldn't get close enough. Pit Lane they went a touch slow for him, he's just not quick enough after looking chance when pealing of the leader's backs.
Race 8- Master O'Reilly was too good in the Winning Edge. Won like a good stayer rounding them up on the turn and winning it comfortably from Zavite. He continues on his upward curve. Then a distance back to Reggie who did well on firm ground. Note Lazer Sharp never got on the track.
Race 9- Storm Signal showed that she is a class above these, we said that. She rattled down the outside to grab Soleil who stuck about and Paris Zero showed something which generally means good things are to come. We made Goldfield Ashes the top rater thinking she might be well over the odds and that while drawn wide she would have a chance to run over them...well she was 40-1 plus and she got into the running line first and looked a big hope but found them way to quick for her.
In all if we didn't get cute on a few races we could have looked very very good.
