Sydney & Melbourne Graham Tew's Racing Review

Syd 1

Real Saga – 1.4-1.3 fav
Viking Legend - 11
Sampler – 6.5

Long odds-on confronted punters in the first and not too many were prepared to take the risk, a risk that was very evident when he had to shoulder out from behind the leaders, but it was far too good in the end.

R2

African Prince – 9-6.5
Forty Days – 6-5
Bondit – 7.5
Coniston Bluebird (unp fav 3.40)

El Cairo (6-5.5) was in commission but appeared to go amiss at the 600m. The fav had little support and went disgracefully. It’s been set for a Derby in NZ, but I would be loathe to take it to Wyong on its effort here.

R3

Ivory Pegasus – 17
La Belle Chataigne – 12-9.5
Zeta – 5.5
Zuhoor (unp fav 3.20)

Zuhoor was easily the best-backed here, had every possible in front and finished near last in a busy finish where the winner swooped from last at the 250m. The second horse would have been a poor result.

R4

Rolling Stock – 7-6
Blood Angel – 6-4.8
Falling In Love – 2.15-2.1 fav

Clinton McDonald continues to prove that the ordinary horses in Melbourne are capable of beating the ordinary horses in Sydney. The fav was easy in the market but still attracted good support, however, the jury is still out on whether it was unsuited by the tempo or is looking for more ground. The winner is honest and could easily win again.

R5

Baha – 8.5
Power To Surprise – 5
Aguilar – 26-18
Chelmsford (unp fav 4.40)

Two runners attracted support here, the fav which had every possible hope but had no ping whatsoever, and Eedeeal (6-5) which bombed the start – a good result.

R6

Buzzy Henry – 5-4.8
Hotel Casino – 5.5
Festus Hagen – 14
Fangles (unp fav 4.60)

This was a poor result when only the winner was really supported. Normally an on-pacer, he was today burnt off by the opposition but sailed down the middle to win.

R7

Lyncean Academy – 6.5-5
Gunnadoit – 7-6.5
De Jetcat – 31-21
Centre Arena (unp fav 3.60)

Punters weren’t interested in this bunch at all. The fav and Beowulf were hard to lay and both failed. We lost on the race.

R8

Anatomica – 5.5-4.6 fav
Baby Casino – 15-14
Abbacina – 8.5

I’ve not yet seen a replay of this race, but gee I thought Baby Casino had one. I had mentally added in the nice result that it would have been and was somewhat surprised when Anatomica’s number went up. Royalaz (10-7) and At My Command (10-8.5) also had fanciers, but they disappointed. It wasn’t a good result.

Melb 1

Killian – 7-5.5
Tribulus – 3.8
Pirouette – 17
Perikon (unp fav 3.00)

The fav was well supported and never got in the hunt here. Tribulus was hard to lay and almost got home.

R2

Fifth Ave Lady – 3.9 fav
Just Like El – 6-5.5
Clandon – 6-5

Clandon was well in commission and rolled along in front but was overrun by the first two late. Youthful High (4.40) was the other in the market but it never featured.

R3

Manila Jewel – 4.4-3.7 fav
Little Antics – 10
Red Flair – 8.5

Lamarr (3.60-6.00) blew like a southerly burster AND raced accordingly. The only one they wanted arrived.

R4

Lord Monty – 3.3-3.1 fav
Okay Oky – 7
Spirited Halo – 8-6.5

Tan Tat Jet (6.0-5.5) lost its rider at the start and this may have had some influence on the outcome as the riderless horse raced through the field to “attack” the three leaders and leave them as sitting shots for the winner which took all day to run down Okay Oky. A poor result.

R5

Cavalaire Bay – 15
Aqaleem – 4.4-4 fav
Pricked - 5

A rarity here when a Freedman runner won at good odds with no supporters. The second horse had to race three wide and went well. Pricked was in demand at 5.00 as was Burley Griffin (5-4.8).

R6

Sooze – 4.2 fav
Red Buttons – 5-4.8
Lammas – 20-18

Ordinary bunch of would-be stayers acted as a deterrent to most punters. This was a low turnover race and a small losing result. Best horse appeared to win, but better than what……………?

R7

Blacken – 7
With Apologies – 5.5
Red Geisha – 11-9.5
Divine Rebel (unp fav 3.70)

About the only thing I got right yesterday was that you didn’t want to be with the cap-catchers at Sandown………………so I launched into Divine Ruler here and happily it did not come into camera view after the 400m.

R8

All Cheval – 7
Cent Otto – 4.8-4.4 fav
Western Coup - 12

Open event to close the program and it held little interest. The fav went around our worst and it put in a pretty good effort but never looked like winning. In fact, it was the only shortener in the race.
