Sydney & Melbourne Graham Tew's Racing Review

Syd 1

Romany Star – 11-8
Rapala – 3
Lotseventy – 3-2.8 fav

Punters at the track in Brisbane were reluctant to get involved in this despite the winner being well backed in Sydney. We held small money on both second and third, but in reality it was a non-event.

R2

Turf Express – 1.75-1.55 fav
Henriette – 9-8
Real Try – 18-16

No trouble to lay this fav, and away from the placegetters there was little support for the remainder. As a bookie, if you went looking for this one there was no trouble to lay it but we only let it go around as a small loser.

R3

Rock Me Baby – 2.9-2.8 fav
Mine In Time – 3.5-3.1
Jersey Lily – 13

Another poor betting affair here, but it is that time of the year. Must say though, “that time of the year” seems to be growing longer every year! Mine In Time ran as our worst, had its chance and wasn’t good enough in the end.

R4

My Sweet Cookie – 3.1-3 eq fav
Jedburgh – 9.5-8.5
Kettledrum – 15
Slick Sniper (3.00 unpl eq fav)

Both of the favourites were layable in this punters wanted to back them, and while the winner gave its supporters some worrying moments, Slick Sniper had every possible behind the leader and just could not go today.

R5

Upper Echelon – 14
Helluva Party – 13-9
Fashion Street – 9.5
Visa Lisa  (unp fav 3.80)

Poor betting race again, and given that the winner had failed punters on numerous occasions, there was absolutely zero support for it. Visa Lisa was hard to lay and had every hope outside the leader and Hussta La Vista (4.40) was not sighted either.

R6

Something Anything – 7.5-6.5
Tenants Tiara – 2.4 fav
Bromide – 12-10

Punters were really scratching their heads after this race-to-race double won by two prolific non-winners. Something Anything was one of our best results despite the winner shortening. I couldn’t have found a reason to back it! The fav was easy to lay, but racing three wide on the speed may have brought about its undoing. Light Red (18-15) was one that Punters found with us, but it never featured.

R7

Obvious Choice – 6-5
Mr Gilly – 3.5-3.3
Deltona – 2.6-2.5 fav

Moderate staying race this, full of moderate horses. Having said that, the first three in the market were the first three home. The winner was the best backed and may win again soon, Small money supported the runners-up.

R8

Blackbriar – 4 eq fav
Thunderbirdsarego – 18-17
Trauma – 4.6-4.4
Ledger (unp eq fav 4.00)

It was very easy to lay the equal favs here, and I was desperately unlucky not to get a good result with either second or third. The winner got a rails run from the 300m and took an eternity to win by a lip and gave young Daniel Ganderton the last two winners for the day. Anninspiration had support but was never a chance.

Melb 1

Kwassa Kwassa – 16-9.5
Carlton Forward – 3.9 fav
Youre Beautiful – 7

I’m going back a little bit here I know, but once upon a time, if a horse was going to shorten like this did, there’d have been a team of southern spivs (dressed in overcoats because they never have learned that it is ALWAYS warm in Brisbane), waiting for the bookies to put in the 15/1 about this winner on the opening call. Nowadays, even after it has shortened you can’t find anyone even wanting to follow the money. Was a winning race only because I found a punter to back the favourite.

R2

Emma Princess – 6.5-6
Red Flair – 4.6-4.4
Turqia – 3.7-3.6 fav

I managed to lay three of the first four in the market here and thought I was a bit stiff not to get Red Flair (the one I couldn’t lay) home. Tinkling (6-5) was the other runner that they backed. The favourite Turquia had to come wide and was just never going to reach the other two.

R3

True Tales – 4-3.7 fav
Carryusall – 7
Forays – 4.2

Poor result here with the best-backed getting the prize. Some pundits were suggesting after this race that the rider of Forays may struggle to get rides in the near future based on his performance here; I was not one of them.

R4

Arclase – 3.5-2.9 fav
Sunday Adieu – 6
Keeping Score – 8

Bad result this, and I realy felt that the runner-up should have nearly landed the prize but it cost itself (and me) dearly by laying in at the top of the straight just as it was winding up – next time. Hidden Wonder was well backed each way at 6.00 and had its chance too.

R5

Anyways – 7.5-6.5
Kings Farewell – 13
La Rocket – 7-6.5
Crossthestart (unp fav 3.90)

There was steady money for this winner but it did provide a handy result as I was easily able to lay the favourite Crossthestart each way and the third horse La Rocket as welll.

R6

Amberino – 2.5-2.35 fav
Youthful High – 19
Loretta Belle – 10

I’m still waiting to see the print here. In a busy finish, I felt that Youthful High had got up and had accordingly started looking at what term deposit interest rates were available. I went looking for the winner, got it, and paid the price. It had plenty of luck getting to the outside and having an un-interrupted passage to the line unlike a few inside it. Alexandra Gardens (5.00) was the other supported runner here. Blackout for me!

R7

China Causeway – 6.5-6
Superzeel – 21
Raeburn – 7.5
The Fonz (unp fav 4.00)

Put my foot on this winner China Causeway. (Smart move Graham it was a best bet for us) but won very little because those canny Melbourne punters can smell the beaten favs – The Fonz ran last and I’m still waiting to lay it (tote punters didn't miss it). For the record Raeburn went around as my worst.

R8

Happy Glen – 16
Mrs Waters – 12
Amerryking – 26
Gran Sasso (unp fav 4.00)

Put my foot on this winner too and actually managed to have a round book (a rarity these days) and therefore get a result. Gran Sasso blotted its copy book; maybe time for a spell. Nothern Point was in commission at 5.00 but wasn’t in the race.
