Caulfield
Race 1- Devil Moon parked in the one out and one back position was too good running away from these on the line. Pretty good win. Mute was just as about as good in second coming off a cold weaving ride from the back and Miss Fantabulous toughed it out for third in the slightly inferior part of the track out wide. Zip Baby Zip was the unlucky runner having no luck in the straight, being turned sideways at one point. Home in 35.68
Race 2- My Middi slipped along the fast lane which was the rail at Caulfield today and won comfortably. We tried to push her in early in the Spring, I hope you were patient and stuck with her. Her top fluctuation price was $10. Good run by the big fellow Dance on Board in second, seemingly had every chance but he finished it off ok. Bodgie was a good solid run too on the speed. Saratime made ground from well back. If you hadn’t sacked Enemy of Average before this race, you would have by now. Home in 35.66
Race 3- Clever ride by Beadman on the beatufilly constituitioned Amitola. Both Beadman and Oliver fixed up Craig Williams on Sefrah who was jammed up with no room at a critical stage in the straight. Amitola showed a nice turn of foot to win this and won untouched over the last 50m. Sefrah ran on really nice keep an eye on her after being put out of business.
Race 4- Brilliant ride by Darren Beadman to get the tough stayer Get Square home in the Norman Robinson. Forced three wide early, Darren elected to make two runs to get to the lead and then he stacked them up from there. Get Square kept rolling home and was strong all the way, Ulfah had every chance to run him down but wasn’t good enough nor were the rest. Sir Lago and Egomaniac only battled, De Lago Mist finally showed something in fifth and forget Galen went around. The race worked against him caught on the inside before the turn and then he got chopped out in the straight. The fact that Sir Lago finished third makes his Flemington win look even better as he defeated Sir Lago there. Forgive Galen for that then. Home here in 35.19 and they went two seconds faster than the fillies 2000m race.
Race 5- Biscayne Bay rolled to the lead on straightening after running three deep to the turn and showed great fight to win the Group 2 sprint. Magnus loomed up to win at the 200m mark after having the drop on the leaders but couldn’t quite get past Biscayne Bay who was going away again on the line. Rightson made nice ground from well back for third and Shadoways was making ground with Amajaye Power from well back. We suggested there were four good hopes in this and that was the First 4. Looking ahead I think the form will hold up out of this going on both performance and time. Overall time was a slippery 1.02.47 home in 34.09.
Race 6- Perfectly Ready was too smart for these. I tipped it for second in the Group one behind Rewaaya last start, hope you stuck with him in lesser grade. We marked it as a horse to follow early in the spring and suggested he would fire more on firm ground. That proved to be right. He beat Live in Vain and Caprizzi Strip comfortably with a gap to the rest headed by Bentley Biscuit. Home in 34.88.
Race 7- Nuclear Free was sent straight to the front and was never headed in this, stretching out nicely to win a good competitive mares race. Both Belle Bizarre and Divine Madonna looked good in running on, and will be threats over the Flemington carnival. Sorenstam made ground from well back. Home in 34.87.
Race 8- Tawqeet given a miracle ride by Dwayne Dunn won the Caulfield Cup in brilliant fashion. Tawqeet was traveling perhaps the sweetest of all mounts coming to the turn and played the percentages by drifting out on straightening, with no room though Dunn summed it up quickly and dived back to the fence where there was galloping room to chase Aqua Da’more, driving through Tawqeet got there and looked impressive on the line. Aqua Da’more ran a gallant second, she along with Activation showed the best turn of foot up the straight but just ran out of gas in the last 100m. Delta Blues made a nice move on straightening but took right to the line to get warm where he worried a few of them out of it to gain third. A Good tough Melbourne Cup trial. Activation in fourth cornered easily the best in the field and looked the winner at the 200m mark but couldn’t quite sustain that run, and was found out a little on the line. Pop Rock was a good run behind them, was doing it easy and would have finished in the money with more luck. Railings showed no dash when required but ran to the line ok as did Dizelle who took advantage of the rails run. Both these look like they will stay the two miles, but winning looks a tick beyond them. Sphenophyta didn’t yield on his run to the line but never reached a great enough pace to win. Zipping and Growl for argument sake were much better runs than it will appear on paper. Zipping was caught in no man’s land, and finished it off really good in the inferior part of the track and Growl stuck to his guns. Of the other’s Ice Chariot was poorly ridden, jockey Jim Byrne went shopping for runs on him, when it was important that he stoke him up before the 600m and make “one” sustained run on him. If ridden better he could have finished five-six lengths closer. Ran good overall time in the Cup (2.27.69) and the last 600m was covered in 34.62.
Race 9- Maybe Better sprouted wings to win the Coongy. While other more fancied runners were being bottled up in traffic, Steven Arnold flicked Maybe Better down the outside and scorched home to win from King of Ashford who looked good and Temple Hills who was given a charmed ride by Luke Nolen. This looked a Bookmaker’s race on paper and that’s how it turned out. With the big rangy types in Spinney, Accumulate, Glebe Run and Rubijon all drawing inside and from there always going to struggle in an evenly run race. In particular forget Rubijon, Accumulate and Spinney went around as they had no luck. Home here in unimpressive 35.67.
Race 10- Crepe De Chine was allowed to roll along in front, and while headed for a stride at about the 100m he had enough in the tank to run it out and beat Street Smart, who was quite well ridden using all of the faster lane on the inside. Bella Princess showed a nice turn of foot first up while Anais found them a little too nippy for her liking. Came home in 33.07 running there overall in half a second slower than Biscayne Bay in the Group 2.
Midweek thoughts…
Miss Evergreen is an explosive mare, she might be placed in harder grade soon but expect her to win anyhow.
Rose of Sharon at Canterbury on debut looked very good in second, she had to do plenty of work and never yielded in the run to the line. She beat the third horse by about five and the winner looked pretty good.
Baron Ruthven raced like a bit of drunk at Bendigo but looks to have plenty of scope and looks a prospect for trainer John Hawkes.
Cinq Rouge a first up winner at the Valley looks to have a very nice action, he will win plenty of races in better grade.
Rubijon has had no luck at all in his races, probably says more about the Jockey than the horse. Gauci is a luck-rider, and not one of mine. The more and more he races without luck the closer he’ll be to a win and the better the price. Don’t give up entirely yet.
Chairmonoftheboard and Stanzout are the horses to follow from Cranbourne Cup day. Chairmonoftheboard sustained a wide run all the way to win on debut, and Stanzout had to make a run from little momentum and was exposed to a late attack from Bon Hoffa.
Win of the Day
Get Square… he was entitled to be run down but wasn’t.
Horses to Follow- Miss Evergreen, Cinq Rogue, Sefrah
Better than it looks- Stanzout, Rose of Sharon, Zipping, De Lago Mist.
